Kragujevac travel guide
Serbia’s first modern capital: Prince Miloš’s court, the oldest theatre in central Serbia and a moving WWII memorial park.
Why visit Kragujevac
Kragujevac, in the heart of Šumadija, is one of Serbia’s biggest cities and was its first modern capital, chosen in 1818 under Prince Miloš Obrenović. Around Milošev venac you can still see the prince’s court, Amidža’s Konak, and the Princely Serbian Theatre from 1835. On the edge of the city, Šumarice Memorial Park remembers the civilians executed here in October 1941. Today it’s a lively student and industrial city, and a good stop between Belgrade and the south.
