Vojvodina

Vojvodina: Europe in miniature

Northern Serbia’s flat, fertile plain, where Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian, Croatian and Rusyn are all official languages.

Vojvodina is the part of Serbia that feels most like Central Europe. For centuries it was a crossroads of the Habsburg world, and you can still see it in Baroque churches, Art Nouveau palaces and villages where several languages are spoken on the same street. The province has six official languages, many religions and a famously relaxed pace of life. Come for Novi Sad and Subotica, stay for wine on Fruška Gora and in Vršac, lunch on a salaš and sunsets over the Danube and Tisa.

  • Bačka: Novi Sad, Sombor, Subotica & Palić
  • Srem: Fruška Gora, Sremski Karlovci
  • Banat: Zrenjanin, Vršac, Deliblato Sands, Bela Crkva

Also worth a stop: Zrenjanin (Baroque center and the Carska bara wetlands) and the Tisa River villages.
